I talked to blogger David Hauslaib, the man behind Jossip and Queerty a few weeks ago for the Out 100 issue. He's 23, and he's rather a savvy and ambitious workaholic.
So what does a blog entrepreneur do all day? "I go to the gym because my fat ass just got back from Paris and I need to work off the cheese," he said. But! "I work! I do. The fable I tell people is that I take three hour lunches and I don't get up 'til noon. But no. Some days I do only work 7 or 8 hours, some days it's 14. Advertising, promotion, trying to reach out to mainstream press—which seems to be working."
David is expanding his blog empire, and not without cash in mind. "I'm not stupid," he said. "I'm not going to launch something that doesn't have a profit motivation."
He launched Queerty because he was bored with gay media. "Part of it was the gay titles out there online virtually don't exist. In print they're terrible! They're little more than personal dating services. The gay porn magazines, I think, are doing a terrific job." That is so true. About the porn, I mean.
Gay websites: Profitable, or no? "I wanted to see a gay blog not neccesarily should but would want to read. Then I looked at the business side of things," he said. "These gay men are rich and they don't have kids to spend their money on and it opens up a whole new roster of ad dollars."
